HOSTING OF THE THE VICE PRESIDENT OF COSTA RICA AND THE UNITED NATIONS UNDER-SECRETARY-GENERAL & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE UNITED NATIONS POPULATION FUND (UNFPA) AT THE DIASPORA AFRICAN FORUM (DAF)

On April 22nd, 2022, The Founder and Head of Mission at the Diaspora African Forum (DAF), H. E. Ambassador Dr. Erieka Bennett hosted the Vice President of the Republic of Costa Rica, H. E. Mrs. Epsy Campbell Barr and the United Nations Under-Secretary-General & Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), H. E. Dr. Natalia Kanem at the Diaspora African Forum (DAF) in Accra Ghana. The two dignitaries who were accompanied by Regional Director of UNFPA Latin America/Caribbean Regional Office, Mr. Harold Robinson and Central West and Central Africa Argentina Mr. Matavel Piccin, and a high-level delegation.

H. E. Ambassador Dr. Erieka Bennett welcomed the delegation to the DAF embassy where she led them to unveil the names of the Vice President of the Republic of Costa Rica, H. E. Mrs. Epsy Campbell Barr and the United Nations Under-Secretary-General & Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), H. E. Dr. Natalia Kanem on the Supporters Wall. This is a wall that has the names of all individuals and institutions that have supported the Mission right from its inception in July 2007. The Ambassador also gave the delegation a tour of the DAF Facility and introduced them to the Mission, its core mandate and some of the groundbreaking achievements the Mission has accomplished over the years. She later led the delegation to the DuBois Centre to pay respect and lay wreaths on the tomb of the W. E. B. Dubois Centre.

In attendance were the King of the Igbo Community in Ghana, HRM. Eze. Dr. Amb. Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu; Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Columbia Ambassador to Ghana, H. E. Claudia Turbay Quintero; Manager at Beyond the Return and representative of Ghana Tourism Authority, Ms. Annabelle McKenzie; Distinguished Board member of DAF, Ms. Brenda Powell and the designer of the 6th Region of Africa Flag; Professor Kwame Addo.

Co – Founder of DAF, Dr. Toni Luck and other Diasporas joined this event via zoom to welcome the delegation to DAF.

 

The Vice President of the Republic of Costa Rica, H. E. Mrs. Epsy Campbell Barr and the United Nations Under-Secretary-General & Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), H. E. Dr. Natalia Kanem expressed their profound gratitude to H. E. Ambassador Dr. Erieka Bennett for the warm welcome at DAF and also bringing so much light and making the event more engaging at the High-Level Diaspora Forum that was held earlier. H. E. Mrs. Epsy Campbell Barr expressed love for her “motherland” and stressed the need to bridge the gap between the People of African Descent and the continent.

The UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr. Natalia Kanem and the Vice President of Costa Rica, H. E. Epsy Campbell Barr arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 for a high-level Diaspora Forum on advancing the right of People of African Descent ahead of this year’s International Day for People of Africa Descent.

The forum was addressed by Vice President of Ghana, H. E. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Costa Rica, H. E. Epsy Campbell Barr, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr. Natalia Kanem and the Founder and Head of Mission at the Diaspora African Forum (DAF), H. E. Ambassador Dr. Erieka Bennett.

Their visit to Ghana, dubbed “The Return Mission”, was a global representation of the significance of advancing equity for, and enhancing inclusion and the wellbeing of People of African Descent.

Activities that were held for the three days visit included, visits to relevant historic touristic sites, a courtesy visit to the President and Vice President of Ghana, a high-level forum and a durbar to be held in their honor of Afro Descendants by Traditional Leaders and a visit to the Diaspora African Forum (DAF)
